All TPPs in Ukraine are damaged or destroyed - Ukrenergo representative

All thermal power plants in Ukraine are damaged or destroyed. This was stated by Yuriy Boyko, member of the Supervisory Board of Ukrenergo.

“Traditionally, TPPs produce about 30% of electricity. Now their share barely reaches 5%,” said Boyko.

The hydropower sector has also suffered heavy losses. Two power plants are completely out of operation, Boyko added.

“All this leads to a significant power shortage in the system. First of all, due to the lack of electricity production by thermal power plants,” he explained.

He said that nuclear power plants are operating, but many units are undergoing repairs in the summer.

Also, up to 40% (over 8 GW) of the maneuvering capacities, which were used to cover morning and evening consumption peaks, have been destroyed. Imports of up to 1.7 GW of capacity from the EU can only partially cover the deficit.

He noted that it is “impossible” to restore all generating capacities by winter.

“Restrictions on electricity consumption will remain a part of our lives for a long time due to the large capacity losses at Ukrainian power plants. The repair campaign will be more difficult, as the scope of restoration is very large,” said Boyko.
