The Georgian parliament voted in favor of a controversial law on “foreign agents,” which caused mass protests in the country's capital.
According to Front News Georgia, mass clashes between protesters and security forces are taking place in Tbilisi, in particular near the parliament building. Detentions have been reported.
Among the protesters are many students and activists who oppose the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence.” Even in the parliament itself, disputes arose between MPs during the discussion of the draft law.
Despite attempts by US and EU representatives to persuade parliamentarians, the draft law was adopted by a majority of "yes" votes.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze explained the need for the law at a meeting with a representative of the US State Department and expressed readiness for cooperation.
